Deep brain stimulation (dbs): treatment for patients with a diagnosis of resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder

Abstract

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects 2% of the general population, sometimes resulting in severe impairment of functional capacity and quality of life of affected people. Between 10 and 30% of these patients do not respond to recommended treatments: pharmacological and cognitive behavioral therapy. In 2008, the FDA approved Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for patients with OCD resistant to treatment. DBS, frequently used for the treatment of refractory Parkinson’s disease, is a viable option for the treatment of patients with resistant OCD, with infrequent and transient adverse effects.
