Abstract

Chronic boredom (acedia) is a negative spiritual state of man, consisting of a combination of apathy and restlessness, which leads him/her to oscillate between depression and the frantic search for distractions of self-destructive character. Additionally, its combination with the presence of psychopathic traits leads do evil as a way to relieve boredom. Gustave Flaubert perfectly reflected this condition in the character of Emma in his masterpiece Madame Bovary
