Abstract

Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained arrhythmia in adults. Its presence is associated with clinically relevant events such as: cerebrovascular accident, transient ischemic attack and systemic embolism. Anticoagulation is an effective action against systemic embolism. However, bleeding is a main risk of anticoagulation. Historically the most widely used anticoagulants were the vitamin K antagonists (warfarin, acenocoumarol). These drugs have many difficulties for chronic use (drug and dietary interactions, narrow therapeutic range). In recent years emerged as a therapeutic alternative in this group of patients the new anticoagulants. In this article we describe the clinical scenarios where these drugs can be used
