Abstract
Introduction: social interventions can change as well as encourage people´s changes in behavior. Objective: To describe and characterize the involvement of staff members in social intervention aimed at promoting environmental stewardship. Materials and methods: Verbal contacts were surveyed and profile of participants of the World Environment Day were analyzed. Information was recorded for prizes that were awarded, waste collected, the entrances to the website between June, 4 and June, 29, as well as individuals approaching the ecological stand from June, 1 to June, 18. Results: there were 765 verbal contacts. 72% attended the stand during the hours when games were offered. 80% of participants were women, 36% administration personnel, 20% nurses and 20% service personnel. Collected items were: bottle caps, 20 kg; recyclable waste, 12 kg; and batteries, 2 kg. 297 green awards were given. There were 272 entries to the website, with an average of 10 visits per day and 7 new users every day. A total of 300 persons attended the ecological stand, 73% of whom were institutional employees with varying degrees of interest. Conclusion: the environmental promotion through participation is higher when the strategy used includes recreational activities with prizes, followed by passive strategies in a stable position and to a lesser extent via the Internet. The identification of a subgroup of motivated personnel may favour the implementation of future policies for environmental stewardship
