Abstract

As it is well established with most health professionals, there is also international evidence demonstrating that Physical Therapists suffer from Burnout Syndrome (SBO). Due to the lack of research in the matter at a national level, the purpose of the study was to research the prevalence of SBO in said population. Objectives: To estimate the proportion of SBO in the population of physical therapists who worked in the Physical Therapy Service of the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires (SK-HIBA). Methods: A cross-section study was conducted among the professionals who worked within the Physical Therapy Service of the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires (n = 104) during November 2013. In an anonymous and confidential manner, an electronic version of the Spanish validated Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire was administered. This measuring instrument included demographic data and a work profile. Results: The response rate was 57.7% (50/104; 68% women). The data obtained in each dimension (domains of the MBI to determine SBO) demonstrated a 16.7% (n = 10) of high Emotional Exhaustion, 10% (n = 6) of high Depersonalization and a 50% (n = 30) of low Personal Accomplishment. Only a 1.7% of the professionals experienced SBO. Conclusions: Within the Physical Therapist service in a University Hospital, the prevalence of SBO is low, although a 50% demonstrated low personal accomplishment. This low rate of SBO shows a strong contrast in comparison to the results internationally published
