Abstract

Aging is associated with a deterioration in sleep quality. Stella Maris Valiensi and collaborators analyze the sleep characteristics of an older adult population studied with overnight polysomnography.


Gabriela Urman and collaborators, from Universidad Maimónides, studied the food and beverage consumption habits in the waiting room of a pediatric clinic and their relationship with the nutritional status of the children.


Various alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes can be produced and secreted by tumors as a paraneoplastic manifestation. Sergio Carlos Kolinski, from the Family and Community Medicine Service, and Luisa Plantalech, from the Metabolic Osteopathies Section of the Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Nuclear Medicine Service, present the case of a patient with renal cancer producing bone-type serum alkaline phosphatase.


Graft-versus-host disease is an entity in which competent immune cells from a grafted tissue recognize and damage antigens present in the transplant recipient. Karen Cueto Sarmiento and collaborators from the Dermatology Service analyze the case of a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, who developed graft-versus-host disease with cutaneous and gastrointestinal involvement, showing a good response to treatment with infliximab and extracorporeal photopheresis.


Between 2010 and 2013, the Internal Medicine Residency collected case reports focused on imaging. In this issue, we publish images corresponding to a pathological fracture caused by bone hydatidosis.


The division of medicine into basic and clinical disciplines, as proposed by the “traditional” curricular organization model, hinders the application of knowledge acquired during medical training to solve patient-related situations. In the section “Questions to the Expert,” Eduardo Durante, Director of the Medical Program at the University Institute of the Hospital Italiano, explains the curricular integration model.


Rectal cancer is associated with a high incidence of local recurrence. In the section “Hospital Italiano in Medline,” María Laura Morici and Carlos A. Vaccaro, from the Colon and Proctology Section of the General Surgery Service, compared the local recurrence rate between patients with locally advanced rectal tumors who, after a complete clinical response following chemoradiotherapy, were not operated on (Watch & Wait group) and patients who underwent resective surgery.


Juan Víctor Ariel Franco and Daniel Simancas-Racines, from the Argentine Cochrane Center (Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires) and the Cochrane Ecuador Collaborating Center (Universidad Tecnológica Equinoccial, Ecuador), respectively, discuss their Cochrane Systematic Review on vaccines for the common cold.
